Our Process

  1. Design & Sizing

Calculating cubic volume for heater sizing and layout for contrast therapy.

  2. Framing & Insulation

Building the room and applying specialized foil vapor barriers.

  3. Rough-in

Running 220v power for heaters and plumbing/drains for plunges.

  4. Woodwork

Meticulously installing tongue-and-groove woods and custom benches.

  5. Equipment Commissioning

Installing heaters, glass, and chilling units.

Cost Guide

A home recovery room ranges from about $8k for a custom corner sauna to $75k or more for a full wellness spa combining a glass-front sauna, integrated cold plunge, and red-light therapy. The cost is driven by whether you are building heat only, cold only, or a true contrast suite with drains and chillers. Custom framing and premium woods cost more than a pre-fab kit but fit the space exactly and last far longer. The estimates below reflect our typical Wasatch and Summit County builds.

Sauna only vs. contrast suite

Adding a cold plunge means plumbing, a drain, and a chiller unit, which can add $12k–$30k over a sauna-only build.

Wood species

Clear Western Red Cedar commands a premium for its aroma and rot resistance; alder, hemlock, and aspen offer lighter, more modern looks at varying price points.

Heater type and power

A properly sized electric heater needs a dedicated 240v circuit, and hidden or high-end heaters add cost over a standard wall unit.

Room build-out

Framing, foil vapor barrier, waterproof flooring, and ventilation for a dedicated room add up beyond the sauna cabin itself.

Luxury integrations

Chromotherapy and red-light walls, ergonomic carved benches, microcement finishes, and a lounge area push toward the top of the range.

Project Timeline

  1. Design & sizing

    1–2 weeks

Calculating cubic volume for heater sizing and laying out the sauna and plunge for contrast therapy.

  2. Framing & insulation

    3–5 days

Building the room and applying the specialized foil vapor barrier.

  3. Rough-in

    2–4 days

Running 240v power for the heater and plumbing with a drain for the plunge.

  4. Woodwork

    4–7 days

Meticulously installing tongue-and-groove paneling and custom benches.

  5. Equipment commissioning

    1–2 days

Installing the heater, glass, and chilling unit, then testing the full system.

Materials & Options

Clear Western Red Cedar

The classic sauna wood — aromatic, dimensionally stable, and naturally resistant to the heat and moisture of repeated use.

Foil vapor barrier

A reflective foil barrier behind the paneling drives heat back into the room and protects the framing from moisture.

Commercial-grade cold plunge

An integrated chiller-equipped plunge holds precise low temperatures for effective, repeatable cold therapy.

Chromotherapy LED lighting

Low-voltage color-therapy lighting adds a spa ambiance and can be tuned for relaxation or energy.

Waterproof tile or microcement flooring

A seamless, sloped waterproof floor handles splashing from the plunge and drains cleanly.

Permits in Utah

Building a sauna and cold plunge involves electrical work (the 240v heater circuit and any chiller) and, for a plunge, plumbing and drainage — all permitted in Utah. Electrical inspectors verify the dedicated circuit and GFCI protection; plumbing inspectors check the water supply and the drain. If the project frames a new room, a building permit and its inspections apply. We coordinate the electrical and plumbing permits, ensure the ventilation and vapor barrier meet best practice, and schedule the required inspections.

Maintenance

  • Wipe down the sauna benches and floor after use and let the room air out fully to prevent mildew.
  • Periodically treat the wood with a sauna-specific cleaner, never a household chemical that could off-gas when heated.
  • Service the cold-plunge chiller and change or clean its filter on the manufacturer's schedule.
  • Check the water treatment and sanitation of the plunge regularly to keep it clean and safe.
  • Inspect the heater rocks and replace any that have crumbled to maintain even, efficient heat.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mis-sizing the heater to the room

A heater too small never reaches temperature and one too large wastes energy and overshoots; sizing to cubic volume is critical.

Omitting or reversing the vapor barrier

Without a correctly installed foil barrier, heat and moisture penetrate the framing, leading to rot and lost efficiency.

Building a plunge with no floor drain

Cold plunges splash and need periodic draining; a room without a drain makes maintenance messy and risks water damage.

Using treated or resinous woods

Chemically treated or high-resin woods can off-gas or leak sap when heated, which is unpleasant and can be unhealthy in an enclosed sauna.
